demoscene
A computer art culture that creates 'demos' - audiovisual productions that are run in real-time on computer hardware. The scene was originally tied to the cracker community, where they would include their productions with serial key generators and similar programs. While this still occurs, there are many artists who now release their demos as standalone products.
The scene holds many contests for people to submit their productions. Of particular note are the '4k' or '64k' contests, where the artists are challenged to confine their productions to files that are just 4 or 64 kilobytes big. This gives the producers a chance to show off not only their artistic skills, but also their coding capabilities, as they will rely heavily on computer generated fractal art and space-saving tricks.
