Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

Crown

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The region at the base of the stem of cereals and forage species from which tillers or branches arise. In woody plants, the root-stem junction. In forestry, the top portions of the tree.

Complementarity

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The relationship between the two strands of a double helix of DNA. Thymine in one strand pairs with adenine in the other strand, and cytosine in one strand pairs with guanine in the other strand.

Operator

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The region of DNA that is upstream from a gene or genes and to which one or more regulatory proteins (repressor or activator) binds to control the expression of the gene(s).

Explantation

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The removal of cells, tissues or organs of animals and plants for observation of their growth and development in appropriate culture media.

Dehalogenation

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The removal of halogen atoms (chlorine, iodine, bromine, fluorine) from molecules, usually during biodegradation.

Photoperiodism

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The response of an organism to changes in day length.

Xenotransplantation

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The transplantation of tissue from one species to another species, typically from non-human mammals to humans. This technology has become very important because of a worldwide shortage of human ...
