Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

Anonymous DNA marker

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A DNA marker (q.v.) detectable by virtue of variation in its sequence, irrespective of whether or not it actually occurs in or near a coding sequence. Microsatellites are typical anonymous DNA ...

Genetic disease

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A disease that has its origin in changes to the genetic material. Usually refers to diseases that are inherited in a Mendelian fashion, although non-inherited forms may also result from DNA mutation.

Km

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A dissociation constant that characterises the binding of an enzyme to a substrate. The smaller the value of K m , the tighter the binding of the enzyme to the substrate. Also called the Michaelis ...

Race

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A distinguishable group of organisms of a particular species, that are geographically, ecologically, physiologically, physically and/or chromosomically distinct from other members of the species.

Auto-immunity

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A disorder in the body's defence mechanism in which an immune response is elicited against its own (self) tissues.

Transposable genetic element

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A DNA element that can move from one location in the genome to another.

Character

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A distinctive feature of an organism.
