D'Hondt system is an electoral formula created by Victor D'Hondt, giving the number of elected officials assigned to the candidates in proportion to the votes obtained.

After scrutinising all the votes, it computes a set of dividers for each list. The formula of the divisors is "total number of votes received by the list" / "each of the integers from 1 to the number of seats in the constituency under scrutiny." Once the divisions are made, the allocation of seats is done by choosing the highest scores until all the seats are distributed. Unlike other systems, the total number of votes is not involved in the computation.

For a single constituency, the system behaves as a pure proportional system. If the application is fragmented in constituencies, is prone to distortion and the overall results may not be proportional to the number of valid votes.
