Various genera in the Melanthieae have species whose common name includes "deathcamas", including Amianthium, Anticlea, Stenanthium, Toxicoscordion and Zigadenus. All parts of the plants are toxic, due to the presence of alkaloids. Grazing animals, such as sheep and cattle, may be affected and human fatalities have occurred.
