Falkland Conflict

The war between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. The war started on April 2, 1982 when Argentina invaded the islands, located off the coast of Argentina. The islands, a protectorate of the British crown, faced a severe threat to their sovereignty, and as such, England deployed a special task force to engage the Argentinian troops. The conflict lasted 74 days and claimed the lives of 649 Argentinian soldiers, 255 British soldiers and 3 Falklanders.

In 2012, the United Kingdom reasserted its position, affirming the importance of the island's sovereignty. This is now controversial, as scientists have recently discovered a wealth of oil reserves in the islands. Argentina still believes it has rights to the islands, potentially leading to renewed conflict in the future.
