The southernmost point in Italy, Lampedusa is the largest of the Pelagie Islands in the Sicily region, although it is closer to Tunisia than Sicily. The island, whose economy is based on fishing, agriculture and tourism, has also become well known as a major entry point to Europe for illegal African immigrants.
