SYN flood

A hacking technique used to cause a denial of service, where the attackers send a large number of TCP SYN packets to the target with spoofed-source IP addresses. This results in many half-open TCP connexions on the target, thus tying up the TCP state resources. SYN is short for synchronized, which designates the first packet that is sent across a TCP network.
