Dry mouth is the reduced flow of saliva. The medical term for dry mouth is xerostomia, pronounced zeer-o-sto-me-uh. Dry mouth can contribute to several dental problems such as decay, gingivitis and gum disease because of the lack of saliva to help to wash away bacteria and the acids that the bacteria produces along with sugars and foods.
