Slave codes

Local laws passed in the South to prevent slaves from gaining any advantage over the dominant white community. The most common of these laws was one making it illegal for slaves to learn to read and write. Others prevented slaves from moving freely from place to place without a pass and from meeting in religious services without the presence of a white man to monitor their activities.
