Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Contributors in Immunology

Immunology

mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR)

Biology; Immunology

Proliferative response occurring when leuko cytes from two individuals are mixed in vitro; T cells from one individual (the responder) are activated by MHC antigens expressed by APC of the other ...

intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAMs)

Biology; Immunology

The ICAMs are cell-surface ligands for the leukocyte integrins and are crucial in the binding of lymphocytes and other leukocytes to certain cells, including antigen-presenting cells and endothelial ...

cross-reaction

Biology; Immunology

A cross-reaction is the binding of antibody to an antigen not used to elicit that antibody. Thus, if antibody raised against antigen A also binds antigen B, it is said to cross-react with antigen B. ...

repertoire of antibodies

Biology; Immunology

Repertoire of antibodies or immunoglobulins repertoire describes the total diversity of antibodies in the human body.

pyrogen

Biology; Immunology

A substance that causes fever.

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes

Biology; Immunology

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes white blood cells have a multilobed nucleus and cytoplasmic granules. There are three types of polymorpho nuclear leukocytes: neutrophils stain neutral dyes, eosin, ...

equilibrium dialysis

Biology; Immunology

The affinity of an antibody to the Antigen can be determined in dialysis at equilibrium, a technique in which the antibodies in a dialysis bag is exposed to varying amounts of a small Antigen able to ...
