Adam Smith

A Scottish economist and philosopher (1723–90) who based his doctrines of the free market on a rational-economic view of human nature. He argued that, as individual selfinterest was the driving force whose aggregate effects resulted in social harmony, there should therefore be no state intervention in the market between buyers and sellers. He also proposed specialisation and the division of labour in manufacturing, though he was concerned about the resulting effects of workers' alienation from their labor.
