Located in central South America, the Plurinational State of Bolivia is a landlocked country with a population of around 10.4 million (2010), two-thirds of whom are indigenous. Bolivia's capital is La Paz, and the country is divided into nine departments. Despite being very rich in minerals, Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America, with the majority of its population working as low-income farmers and miners.
