Instagram is a free photo sharing application originally developed for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows users to take a photo, apply a digital filter to transform its look and feel, then share it on a variety of social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, TermWiki and Instagram.com. Developed by Burbn, Inc., the photo sharing app gained popularity quickly by making it easy for anyone to edit and share photos istantly. In April 2012, the company added support for Android camera phones running 2.2 (Froyo) or higher. It is distributed via the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

Facebook announced on April 9, 2012 it would acquire the Instagram and its 13 employees for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock, with plans to keep it independently managed.
