Pontus

Mountainous region on the south edge of the Black Sea, east of Bithynia. Greeks colonised the coast, and the kingdom of Pontus reached its largest extent under Mithradates VI, who challenged Roman power in Asia Minor. In 63 BC Pompey made Pontus a province, but it drifted out of Roman control under Mark Antony. It was brought back into the empire under Augustus.
