Saturnalia

A pagan festival held to honor the Roman god Saturn, believed to strongly be the basis of the modern day christmas celebrations. The official date for the celebrations was December 17th, but would often extend up until December 25th. Participants would exchange gifts with each other on the 23rd.

The Catholic church denies the connection of christmas to saturnalia, but historical and anthropological accounts present strong evidence in its support.
