South Sudan
On January 6, 2005, South Sudan became an autonomous region of the Republic of Sudan. On July 9, 2011, this southern region of Sudan will become its own independent country, officially titled the Republic of South Sudan. The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is expected to become the national armed forces of South Sudan after its independence has been declared, with Salva Kiir Mayardit as president.
