Altar clock

Clocks with wooden cases were rare before 1660, but as the pendulum became established wood was used in greater quantities. Clocks began to be made with wooden cases shaped like the altars of the time. They were most popular in Italy, although English examples are known, but the term 'altar clock' is German. The name relates to the shape and does not imply that the clocks were meant to stand on altars.
