(1) That energy which is scattered from a surface on which energy is incident and which lies within a hemisphere having its centre on the surface and including the source of the radiation. (2) That part of the energy incident on a surface which is neither transmitted nor reflected. The term may or may not include energy absorbed at the surface and re-radiated.
