The basmala is the collective Islamic phrase that is recited before each sura, with the ninth sura exempted. The phrase bismillahi ar-rahmani ar-rahim means "in the Name of Allah the merciful the compassionate". A shortened version of the basmala is also said: bismillahi, which means "in the Name of Allah".
