The informal term for a data communications channel that links computers and permits users to "converse,"often about a particular subject ofinterest, by sending text messages to one another in real time, as on the channels provided by IRC. Chat rooms aresupported by online services and some electronic bulletin board systems. They can also be set up by individualswho have appropriate software.
