Degree of extension

One of the schematic categories in the configurational system. Degree of extension relates to how far quantities of space or time 'stretch' over distance. This category interacts with boundedness, but introduces a more detailed structure. For example, space or time can be either a point (speck, to die), a bounded extent (ladder, to wash up) or an unbounded extent (river, to sleep). Focusing on the domain of time, examples (1–3) below illustrate that each of these degrees of extension (encoded by the verb) is compatible with different types of adverbial expressions, given in square brackets.

  1. The soldier died (at three o'clock) (point)
  2. Max washed up (in ten minutes) (bounded extent)
  3. Isabella slept (for an hour) (unbounded extent)
