Two or more persons who hold title to real estate jointly, with equal rights to use it during their respective lives; often contains the provision that on the death of a joint tenant, his or her share in the property passes onto the survivor. A joint tenant often cannot sell or encumber his or her interest without the consent of all of the other joint tenants.
