Refers to the buying and selling of companies, or the combination of two companies in which only one of the companies survives. Acquisitions can be asset purchases, where the buyer purchases the seller's assets, without assuming any liabilities, or stock purchases, where the buyer purchases the business's stock and takes over the seller's business.
