winter solstice
The time when the sun is at its southernmost point in the sky, the greatest possible distance from the celestial equator in the Northern Hemisphere. The winter solstice annually occurs around December 21st or 22nd, and in 2010 is especially noted for the red lunar eclipse that will accompany it.
