The set of work activities, both technical and managerial, required to satisfy the terms and conditions of a project agreement. A software project should have specific starting and ending dates, well-defined objectives and constraints, established responsibilities, and a budget and schedule. A software project may be self-contained or may be part of a larger project. In some cases, a software project may span only a portion of the software development cycle. In other cases, a software project may span many years and consist of numerous subprojects, each being a well-defined and self-contained software project.

(1) A user-oriented document, which describes the system characteristics from an end users' viewpoint. The document is used to coordinate overall quantitative and non-quantitative system goals for the user, buyer, developer, and other interfacing organizations (e.g., training, facilities, staffing, and maintenance elements). It describes the user organizations and mission from an integrated system point of view. The ConOps document is a place to record non-quantitative systems requirements (also called design goals). (2) A tool used in the elicitation of software requirements. Also called operational concept document (OCD) .

A software peer review, conducted by the peers of the software developer, to evaluate a software element. Although usually associated with code examination, this process is also applicable to the software requirements and software design. The major objectives of the walkthrough are to find defects (e.g., omissions, unwanted additions, and contradictions) in a specification and other products and to consider alternative functionality, performance objectives, or representations. Walkthroughs are credited to a well-known scientist by the name of Dr. Gerald Weinberg. He developed the theory of an egoless review. An egoless review (now called a walkthrough) is a review by peers of the author of the code.

In system engineering, a system milestone review conducted when the definition effort has proceeded to the point where system requirements and the design approach are defined. Alternative design approaches and corresponding test requirements have been considered and the developer has defined and selected the required equipment, logistic support, personnel, procedural data, and facilities. This normally is late in the definition phase. This review is conducted in sufficient detail to ensure a technical understanding between the system developer and the customer. The system segments are identified in the system design specification, and the hardware/software configuration items are identified in the requirements specifications.
