Pugachev's Revolt
Russian peasant and Cossack revolt (1773- 75), led by Yemelyan Pugachev (c.1742-75). Claiming to be the murdered czar, Peter III, he declared the abolition of serfdom, and gathered a large following. Immense bloodshed and destruction followed, and the Russian army suppressed the revolt only after a long campaign. Pugachev was captured and executed.
