2b. (American) A hearty laugh Both senses of the word are part of the jar- gon of the entertainment industry and are probably imitative of an explosive chortle, or else like 'biff' denote a 'hit'.

3. (British) A swot. The word is probably a shortening of the colloquial 'boffin'.
