Genus of 14 species of evergreen shrubs and trees, and evergreen and partly deciduous, sometimes thorny climbers, from forest and thickets in tropical and subtropical South America. Large woody vine, native to Brazil, flowers are grouped in cymes of 3, and each flower has a brightly coloured subtending bract. bougainvillaea can become a large plant if not controlled. Many types have dangerous, stout spines.
