Writing table or desk whose French name derives from bure , a coarse cloth used in the Middle Ages to cover tables at which clerks wrote. Beginning in the 18th century various designs featured a flat writing surface and drawers, with a sloping fall front or quarter cylinder roll-top, which when rolled down covered both the writing surface and the drawers.
