Quality assessment

The (subjective) process in measuring the quality of an image or video sequence as it appears to humans. Humans find certain types of errors (image distortions) to be more acceptable than others.

In video coding, one is often trying to maximise the subjective quality of the video produced by the coding algorithm, which is often quite different than the mathematical quality (measured, for example, by the peak signal-tonoise ratio or PSNR).
