Three ranks. The "titleholder" ranks at the top of sumo. There are actually 4 ranks in sanyaku: yokozuna, ōzeki, sekiwake and komusubi, since the yokozuna is historically an ōzeki with a licence to perform his own ring-entering ceremony. The word is occasionally used to refer only to sekiwake and komusubi.
