Side chain

The moiety of an amino acid residue in a protein, or of a free amino acid, that is attached to the α-carbon and is unique to each amino acid, e.g. the isopropyl group of valine, the benzyl group of phenylalanine. The group attached to C-17 of sterols, mineralocorticoids and bile acids is also called a side chain.
