Mackerel sky

A condition of cloud coverage of the sky consisting of rows of altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds. These clouds look like the pattern of scales on a mackerel fish.

Balance

A condition of equilibrium, or rest. A lever is in balance when all the forces acting on one side of the fulcrum, or pivot point, are exactly equal to all the forces acting on the opposite side.

Turbulence

A condition of fluid flow in which the flow is not smooth. The velocity of the flow changes rapidly, and the flow direction often reverses itself.

Screeching

A condition of combustion instability in a gas turbine engine or afterburner. The combustion produces a shrill, high-pitched noise.

Out-of-phase

A condition of cyclic values in which two waves do not pass through zero at the same time.
