Boxing

Terms of or relating to a sport in which two opponents engage in hand to hand combat within a defined boundary. A referee manages the match in order to ensure rules are not broken and to declare a winner if a player is not knocked unconscious.

This is a warning given by the referee to a boxer. Usually they are given for minor infractions of the rules, however, after three cautions, a warning is given.

clinch

A clinch is when the boxers are holding or leaning on each other and not boxing. The referee will order them to break, if this goes on too long.

swinging bag

This is a bag that is on a type spring stand so the back moves back and forth as it is struck so the boxer can practice hitting a moving target and also practice is aim and speed.

The short pants that fighters wear in the ring. Professional only wear trunks, amateurs wear trunks and a t-shirt or tank top.

tape

Fighters use tape, which is really a bandage, wrapped around their hands to help protect the hands. The knuckles can't be wrapped it is against the rules.

toe-to-toe

The fighters who are standing right in front of each other slugging it out are said to be going Toe-to-Toe.

trainer

The person who trains and instructs the boxer. He is also in his boxer's corner during the fight, giving guidance, advice and motivation between rounds.
