Coal

Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock usually occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds or coal seams. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Contributors in Coal

Coal

Uranium concentrate

Energy; Coal

A yellow or brown powder obtained by the milling of uranium ore, processing of in situ leach mining solutions, or as a byproduct of phosphoric acid production.

Other oxygenates

Energy; Coal

Other aliphatic alcohols and aliphatic ethers intended for motor gasoline blending (e.g., isopropylether (IPE) or n-propanol).

Split tails

Energy; Coal

Use of one tails assay for transaction of enrichment services and a different tails assay for operation of the enrichment plant. This mode of operations typically increases the use of uranium, which ...

Uranium mill tailings

Energy; Coal

The sand-like materials left over from the separation of uranium from its ore. More than 99 percent of the ore becomes tailings.

Other trucks/vans

Energy; Coal

Those trucks and vans that weigh more than 8,500 lbs GVW.

Reburn

Energy; Coal

An advanced co-firing technique using natural gas to reduce pollution from electric power plants.

Spontaneous combustion, or self-heating, of coal

Energy; Coal

A naturally occurring process caused by the oxidation of coal. It is most common in low-rank coals and is a potential problem in storing and transporting coal for extended periods. Factors involved ...
