Coastal engineering

A branch of civil engineering that applies engineering principles specifically to projects within the coastal zone including areas nearshore, estuary, marine, and shoreline.

Contributors in Coastal engineering

Coastal engineering

Stockpile

Engineering; Coastal engineering

Sand piled on a beach foreshore to nourish downdrift beaches by natural littoral currents or forces. See feeder beach.

Geophysics

Engineering; Coastal engineering

The study of the physical characteristics and properties of the earth, usually employing quantitative physical methods.

Tidal range

Engineering; Coastal engineering

The difference in height between consecutive high and low (or higher high and lower low) waters.

Cofferdam

Engineering; Coastal engineering

A temporary watertight structure enclosing all or part of the construction area so that construction can proceed in the dry.

Patch reef

Engineering; Coastal engineering

A moundlike or flat-topped organic reef, generally less than 1 km across, frequently forming part of a larger reef complex.

Wave forecasting

Engineering; Coastal engineering

The theoretical determination of future wave characteristics, usually from observed or predicted meteorological phenomena.

Flood ramp

Engineering; Coastal engineering

Seaward-dipping sand platform dominated by flood-tidal currents, located on ebb-tidal shoal near the opening to the inlet.
