Naval gunfire support (NGFS)

Fire provided by Navy surface gun systems in support of a unit or units tasked with achieving the commander's objectives. A subset of naval surface fire support.

Fire provided by Navy surface gun and missile systems in support of a unit or units.
Counterfire

Fire intended to destroy or neutralise enemy weapons. Includes counterbattery and countermortar fire.
Direct fire

Fire delivered on a target using the target itself as a point of aim for either the weapon or the director.
