Alluvial deposits

Detrital material which is transported by a river and deposited - usually temporarily - at points along the floodplain of a river. Commonly composed of sands and gravels.

This is to do with mechanical / physical weathering breaking down rock along its weak points (such as joints or bedding planes). An example would be 'frost shattering*.

Base level

Of a stream is the point below which the stream cannot cut. A temporary base level along a stream, such as a lake may be removed by stream action . Ultimate base level is the ocean.

Clay minerals

Clay mineral are a group of complex and loosely-defined minerals containing aluminium and silica; they form from the alteration and weathering of primary silicate minerals
