Cataclastic rock

Metamorphic rocks that resemble breccia or poorly sorted sandstone and that form by dynamic metamorphism, which breaks and reorients grain.

The ratio of a regions potential annual evaporation, as determined by its receipt of solar radiation, to its average annual precipitation.

Aggradation

The building up of deposits by rivers within channels which were forced to drop the load they are carrying. This results in bed elevation.

Abyssal floor

Earth science; Geology

The relatively flat surface of the deep ocean floor spreading from an oceanic ridge. It consists of the abyssal plain and the abyssal hill.

Coma

Earth science; Geology

A roughly spherical region of diffuse gas which surrounds the nucleus of a comet. Together, the coma and the nucleus form the comet's head.

Biological indicator

Earth science; Geology

An organism that is used to detect the level of chemical activity in an area, such as lichens used to detect the amount of sulphur dioxide in the air.
