Measuring the accuracy in a ship's magnetic compass so its readings can be adjusted – often by turning the ship and taking bearings on reference points.

Swinging the lamp

Telling sea stories. Referring to lamps slung from the deckhead which swing while at sea. Often used to indicate that the storey teller is exaggerating.
