Any of various cold-blooded, usually egg-laying vertebrates of the class Reptilia,that have an external covering of scales or horny plates and breathe by means of lungs.

An animal that cannot regulate its own body temperature, rather it's regulated by the environment, so they often bask for heat, burrow, and hibernate. A snake is a ectothermic animal.

An animal that maintains its body temperature at a relatively constant level by physiological means regardless of the temperature of the environment (also called warm-blooded)

Estivation

Animals; Reptiles

Similar to hibernation, some herptiles will bury themselves and remain dormant when the climate is too dry and/or hot for comfort. It is also spelled aestivation.
