Sag

Earth science; Seismology

A narrow geological depression found in strike-slip fault zones. Those that contain water are called sag ponds.

Subduction zone

Earth science; Seismology

A dipping ocean plate into the Earth away from an ocean trench. It is usually the locus intermediate and earthquakes defining the Wadati-Benioff zone (e.g. Aleutian, Chile, Izu-Bonin).

Strike-slip fault

Earth science; Seismology

A fault whose relative displacement is purely horizontal (e.g. San Andreas).

Left-lateral fault

Earth science; Seismology

A strike-slip fault on which the displacement of the far block is to the left when viewed from either side.

Benioff zone

Earth science; Seismology

A narrow zone, defined by earthquake foci, that is tens of kilometres thick dipping from the surface under the Earth's crust to depths of up to 700 kilometers. (Also Wadati-Benioff zone. )

Double couple

Earth science; Seismology

A model to describe the equivalent body forces for a dislocation source. This model is used to balance the moment of the force system so that no net moment is added to the medium and so that the ...

Regression analysis

Earth science; Seismology

A statistical technique applied to data to determine, for predictive purposes, the degree of correlation of a dependent variable with one or more independent variables. (See Least-squares fit).
