Solar power

Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.

Contributors in Solar power

Solar power

Battery available capacity

Energy; Solar power

The total maximum charge, expressed in ampere-hours, that can be withdrawn from a cell or battery under a specific set of operating conditions including discharge rate, temperature, initial state of ...

Qualification test

Energy; Solar power

A procedure applied to a selected set of photovoltaic modules involving the application of defined electrical, mechanical, or thermal stress in a prescribed manner and amount. Test results are ...

Array operating voltage

Energy; Solar power

The voltage produced by a photovoltaic array when exposed to sunlight and connected to a load.

Power density

Energy; Solar power

The ratio of the power available from a battery to its mass (W/kg) or volume (W/l).

Power factor (PF)

Energy; Solar power

The ratio of actual power being used in a circuit, expressed in watts or kilowatts, to the power that is apparently being drawn from a power source, expressed in volt-amperes or kilovolt-amperes.

Availability

Energy; Solar power

The quality or condition of a photovoltaic system being available to provide power to a load. Usually measured in hours per year. One minus availability equals downtime.

Primary battery

Energy; Solar power

A battery whose initial capacity cannot be restored by charging.
