Water

Artesian aquifer

Natural environment; Water

A geologic formation in which water is under sufficient hydrostatic pressure to be discharged to the surface without pumping.

Drought

Natural environment; Water

Term applied to periods of less than average precipitation over a certain period of time.

In-situ oxidation

Natural environment; Water

Technology that oxidises contaminants dissolved in groundwater, converting them into insoluble compounds.

Plug flow

Natural environment; Water

Type of flow that occurs in tanks, basins, or reactors when a slug of water moves through without ever dispersing or mixing with the rest of the water flowing through.

Suspended-sediment concentration

Natural environment; Water

The ratio of the mass of dry sediment in a water-sediment mixture to the mass of the water-sediment mixture. Typically expressed in milligrammes of dry sediment per litre of water-sediment mixture.

Atmosphere

Natural environment; Water

The layer of gases surrounding the earth and composed of considerable amounts of nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen.
