Formula one
Formula One, also known as F1 or Formula 1 is known officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest level of single seater auto racing sanctioned by the FIA. The first Formula One season was in 1950.
Formula One consists of twelve teams, each of which has two drivers. As of 2012 the constructors include: Red Bull Racing; Ferrari; McLaren; Lotus; Mercedes; Sauber; Force India; Williams; Toro Rosso; Caterham; Marussia and HRT. There are four engine suppliers: Cosworth; Ferrari; Mercedes and Renault.
The scoring system operates the following way: 25 points for 1st, 18 for second, 15 for third, 12 for fourth, 10 for fifth and so on until zero points are rewarded.
Formula One has produced a number of high profile names such as Michael Schumacher and the late Ayrton Senna.
The 2012 world championship was won by Sebastian Vettel of Germany.
