This term generally designates a period in european intellectual history, also known as the “age of reason,” beginning in the seventeenth and peaking in the eighteenth century (and thus largely coincident with the art historical period of the baroque). The highest enlightenment ideal was the independence of reason – whether from religious superstition, arbitrary authority or inherited custom. Exemplary figures (among many others) include voltaire, immanuel kant, and thomas jefferson.
