Upotreba termina "diskurs" kod teoretičara uobičajeno označava stavljanje naglaska na parol pre nego na lang. Mnogi savremeni teoretičari pod uticajem Mičela Fokola (Michel Foucault) ne tretiraju jezik kao monolitni sistem, već kao struktuiran sistem koji sadrži različite diskurse, kao što su nauka, pravo, vlada, medicina, žurnalizam i smrtnost.
