A Dream Of Red Mansions
It is one of the most tremendous pieces of literature ever written in China. The author dramatically portrays the Jia family which is surrounded by wealth, power and prestige, yet on the inside is filled with chaos and division which frequently prevail over happiness and unity. This greatly affects other families who are in alliance with them for business and politics. Baoyu was born with a jade in his mouth and his grandmother thinks this auspicious birth signifies that he will have a magnificent future. His father recognises great potential in him; he thinks he can become a great scholar but bemoans his laziness and urge to play too much. His mother describes him as a lunatic and real devil so that his cousin Daiyu and other maids can ignore him but her words fall on deaf ears. Baoyu falls in love with Daiyu but is obliged to marry Baochai.
