Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is comprised of a set of two temples, which were constructed for pharaoh Remesses II who reigned for 67 years. The temples were cut from rock and shifted to a higher ground in the 1960s. With the construction of Aswan High Dam, there were fears that the Abu Simbel would be submerged in water. As a result, it was disassembled and reconstructed on top of a cliff 200 feet above the original site. The temples façade is dominated by four huge seated statues of the pharaoh.
